How did you start in photography?

When we moved to Mauritius in 2007, Dave, the man who owned the Chinese takeaway in our road also owned the Nikon shop in Port Louis. Having loved my tiny blue Nikon Coolpix, but feeling ready for an upgrade, I asked him to bring me “one of those big black cameras, but not too expensive." And so, with my Nikon D90, and a kit 18-55mm lens, I fell deeply in love with photography. I spent all my days learning everything I could about camera settings, composition, and lighting. Nobody was safe from that 18-55mm, and to this day, I love to see reminders pop up on Facebook of friends' babies photos I took circa 2008 :-)

What is your genre and how did you fall into that genre?

I specialise in photographing small weddings and elopements.  I fell into this genre after we emigrated to Australia 7 years ago and I noticed that there seemed to be nobody offering short packages of just an hour or two for simple weddings. Now that market is quite competitive, but I am staying in it, as I love the down-to-earth people that I meet, and the beautiful, heartfelt unions that I witness. I feel privileged every week to be part of people’s love stories.

What has been one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?

One of the most memorable few days of my career was when I was the photographer for Princess Anne’s official visit to Mauritius! For two days, I sped around in a BMW with black tinted windows photographing her tour. It was an exhilarating and exhausting time, and I got to see how hard the royals work on tour!

What is your most favourite piece of equipment?

I can’t imagine life without my Epson P800 printer. Man, I love that thing! I print photos for each wedding and each family I photograph. I love choosing beautiful paper, printing it perfectly, wrapping it all up in a pretty way and delivering it. I think most people haven’t ever seen beautifully printed, fine art images, and it makes me so happy to see them unwrap their prints.

How do you approach your post production and what programs do you use?

My system of culling in Photo Mechanic  is so speedy and I really enjoy using Capture One to edit my photos. I try to get as much right in camera as possible, but Capture One is so easy, fast and powerful that I can easily edit a little wedding in just a few hours, so that I can deliver a full gallery to clients on the Monday afternoon after the wedding.

 What is your guilty pleasure?

I’m not sure if you could call it guilty, but I am a yoga devotee and I get so much pleasure from it. I get onto my mat 6 or 7 days a week to help me relax, focus, and re-center.
