How did you start in photography?
Photography was always a passion, and when it came time to choose a career I was fortunate to have a family that supported following what I was interested in, not what "I should be doing" with my school results. I then studied at TAFE and graduated 20 years ago this year. I'm totally not old enough for it to have been that long ago?! From there it was straight into a full time job, then building my own business.
What is your genre and how did you fall into that genre?
I still offer a mix of services, it all relates around people. I used to shoot primarily weddings (Compose used to shoot close to 100 weddings a year at one stage!), but these days still shoot a few because I love weddings and family portraits, but focus primarily on the corporate market, from corporate headshots to general marketing images and content for business.
What do you feel has been your biggest achievement so far?
Finally getting some kind of work/life balance! It's taken a loooong time but I feel I finally have a decent routine happening. Probably not the expected answer, but it's probably what I've worked the hardest and longest to achieve as a business owner.
Where do you see the future of photography heading?
We're definitely in the next big change, so as an industry we need to understand what new technology will be able to do, and how we can make the most of it within our businesses. We've seen the digital world, the phone camera, and now AI is coming along. We can survive the changes if we keep innovating and adapting ourselves.
I'm really interested to see how AI affects the world, are we going to get sick of the make believe and value real moments more?
Do you currently shoot film?
I still have a film camera...and there is a roll of film in it from about 20 years ago!
What is your favourite food, book, and movie?
I'd go a pumpkin and feta pizza with a glass of Veuve Clicquot on the side. Fave book would still be Pride and Prejudice. I don't really have a favourite movie, for TV shows anything that's a British murder mystery like Midsomer Murders. I need something a bit silly with nice scenery.
Tell us what you’ve got going on with your photography and/or business right now?
I've got a great little studio in Freo, where we can achieve a lot in a small space. It's a great meeting point for portraits and headshots in the historic end of town, and we can also set it up as a gallery when not being used for shoots, so I've finally started an art print store and can have personal work on display for sale. Something I remember mentioning I wanted to do in an interview after an APPA win close to 10 years ago. I've got two staff who are wonderful, and hoping to build the business back up after taking it easy for a few years.
